J1 Students – What Are They For?
(These article deals specifically with students from Eastern Europe, whose native language is not English.) Bosses who hire j1 students tend to hire them again, as those kids prove to be hard-working and reliable, albeit lacking in language and social skills. The main reason employers like to hire these people is to save on taxes. The j1s do not pay Social Security, Federal Unemployment and Medicare taxes, so the employers do not have to match those taxes and thus save at least seven percent of the payroll, which if you hire dozens of people, accounts for quite some savings.
Of course, the whole practice of hiring foreigners when so many locals are out of work – may not stay without criticism for long. The opponents of this practice claim that foreign students engage in many illegal activities, like underage drinking and common theft. However, there was never a detailed research if any of these accusations are true.
